Tiger Trio combines for 63 in win at Park
For the 2nd straight year, Georgetown traveled to greater Kansas City to play in the Remy Williams Memorial Invitational. With emotions high for all in attendance, the Tigers were able to focus and make Remy proud in a 88-78 wire-to-wire win.
Tae Dozier got the Tigers off to a roaring start with a slam in the opening minute followed by a 3 on the next possession to give the Tigers a quick lead they would never relinquish. 4 points from Darien Lewis around an Andres Burney dunk shot Georgetown out to an 11-2 just 4 minutes in and sent Park back to its home bench for a timeout. After a Pirate 3, Aden Nyekan scored 4 straight inside to push the Georgetown edge to 10 just 5 minutes into the game. Park countered with a 10-5 run to get back within 5 with 11 minutes to go. Moments later with the lead at 20-17, Jaquias Franklin found a driving lane, scored and got fouled. The 3-point play got his night going and doubled the lead back to 6. Park closed within 2 at 23-21, but Burney hit consecutive shots to again give GC a 6-point lead with just under 5 minutes to go in the half. With just under 4 minutes left, Park's Jasigha Barnes scored 5 points in 18 seconds to cut Georgetown's lead to 27-26, forcing Chris Briggs to call for time. The move worked as Jaquias Franklin nailed a 3 out of the timeout off a feed from Tae Dozier. The teams traded buckets and free throws the rest of the half as Georgetown took a 37-32 lead to the locker room.
Andres Burney scored the last points of the first half and the first 3 of the second as he laid the ball in on the first play of the half and was fouled. The free throw gave the Tigers a quick 40-32 edge. Park got back within 5 at 40-35, but Burney was there again with a lob dunk from Tae Dozier. Moments later, Dozier nailed another 3 to give the Tigers a 49-41 lead with 13:56 to go. He hit another with 11:09 to go to put the lead back at 8, 54-46. Park would not go away as it got back within 5 with just under 8 minutes left, but Jaquias Franklin dialed one up from distance to push the lead to 65-57. The same pattern carried true for the rest of the game as Park never could get within a single possession. Jabrion Spikes scored 6 points in the final 46 seconds to help close out the win. Spikes was quiet on the night with just 8 points.
The story was the trio of Andres Burney, Tae Dozier and Jaquias Franklin. They combined for 63 points, including 39 of Georgetown's 51 in the 2nd half. Burney led the scoring with 24 points on 10-13 shooting and 7 rebounds. Tae Dozier ended with 20 points, 11 rebounds and 4 assists. Jaquias Franklin dished out 7 assists to go along with 19 points. The trio shot 63% from the floor, 5-12 from 3, and 8-9 at the charity stripe to carry the Tigers to the road win.
