Tigers clinch outright MSC Regular Season Title
The Georgetown Tigers have clinched the outright Mid-South Conference regular season title for the 13th time in program history, after a 79-71 win at Campbellsville on Thursday night. It's the 15th overall regular season title for the Tigers since the Mid-South Conference was founded in the 1996-97 season.
The win secures the #1 seed for the Mid-South Conference Tournament, which comes with a first-round bye and the automatic trip to Bowling Green. The win also secures a ticket back to the NAIA Tournament for the 32nd straight year.
The title looked to be on shaky ground early as Campbellsville raced out to a 10-2 lead in their effort to play spoiler to the orange & black. The Tigers would trail by as many as 11 in the first half, when CU's Jace Wallace knocked down a 3 to give Campbellsville a 24-13 lead with 9:22 to go in the half. GC's defense took over the rest of the half as Campbellsville could only muster 5 more points before the break. Georgetown got timely shooting from Cam Brooks-Harris and Tommy Thomas to close the gap. In the Tigers 19-5 run to close the half, the duo combined for 15 points, to put Georgetown ahead, 32-29 at the break.
The 2nd half proved to be an offensive show from both sides. Campbellsville got out to a hot start with a 12-2 run to take a 41-34 lead with 16:41 to go. Consecutive 3s from Brooks-Harris and Thomas brought GC back within 1. After a CU bucket, Jaquay Wales joined the party with back-to-back baskets to put GC ahead, 44-43, with just under 14 minutes left. From there, the teams traded the lead, neither side leading by more than 3 until there was less than 5 minutes to go. With the game tied at 59 with 6 minutes to go, Tommy Thomas hit a driving layup, got fouled, and hit the free throw to put Georgetown up 62-59. It would prove to be the bucket that put Georgetown ahead for good. Thomas would convert on another and-1 to put his team up 67-63 with 4:41 to go.
With Campbellsville getting back within 2, Drew LaMont knocked down his only 3 of the night. It was a massive 3-pointer to put Georgetown up 70-65 with 4:03 to go. Jabrion Spikes followed with an inside bucket to give the Tigers a 7-point lead and much needed breathing room with just over 3 minutes to go. Campbellsville would get no closer than 6 the rest of the game.
While Campbellsville shot 55% in the 2nd half, they could not build a 2nd half lead because Georgetown went to another level. The orange & black burned the nets at a 68% clip in the final 20 minutes.
Jabrion Spikes and Rashad Bishop combined to go 7-7 from the floor in the 2nd half for 15 points. Spikes finished with 8, while Bishop ended with 11. Speaking of perfect, Cam Brooks-Harris was that tonight from the floor. He finished 6-6 from the field and 4-4 from 3-point range for a total of 16 points. Jaquay Wales turned in strong total night with 8 points, 4 rebounds, 5 assists, and 3 steals.
The story of the 2nd half though proved to be Tommy Thomas. The junior played a season-high 27 minutes and tallied a new Georgetown career-high 18 points. 13 of the 18 came in the 2nd half on 5-7 shooting.
The Tigers wrap up the regular season on Saturday against Lindsey Wilson for Senior Day, starting at 3:00pm. Once all games are completed on Saturday, the Tigers will know the potential matchup in the conference quarterfinals.
