No. 13 Men's Hoops Rolls Past Campbellsville

GEORGETOWN, Ky. - On some nights, basketball teams rely on their offense to set the table, and at first glance at the stats from Monday night's Georgetown College men's basketball game against Campbellsville University, the offense looks to have propelled the ship. But it was the No. 13 Tigers defense that kept Georgetown in a good position until the offense got on track in the middle of the first half.

Georgetown (22-3, 15-3 MSC) continued to roll with a 78-49 win over Campbellsville University (12-14, 5-13 MSC) at Davis-Reid Alumni Gymnasium and remained within a half-game of the top spot in the Mid-South Conference

The GC Tigers' offense struggled out of the gate, making only six of their first 17 shots in the game, and they turned it over three times in the first 10 minutes. The Georgetown defense, though, kept Campbellsville to 5-for-15 shooting with four giveaways in that span. With 9:24 to go, the Georgetown offense slid into gear. That's when Derrin Boyd knotted the score at 14, and it set the host Tigers off on a 15-0 run that saw Georgetown suddenly up 13 with 4:51 to play in the half. The momentum burst came as a part of a larger 26-6 finishing run in the half, and at the break, Georgetown led comfortably, 38-20.

The game was never in doubt in the second half. Georgetown took its first 20-point lead with 14:47 to go in the game on a 3-pointer from MSC Player of the Week Kyran Jones - one of nine second half 3s from the GC Tigers. Campbellsville did manage one final mini-run when it scored 13 of 14 points in the game to cut the margin to 60-44 with 5:14 to play. Over the final minutes, Georgetown's defense roared to life again, as it held Campbellsville to 1-for-its-last-6 shots in the game and pulled away to the 29-point win.

Georgetown's defense stifled Campbellsville to the tune of 17-for-57 (29.8%) shooting in the game including a paltry 2-for-17 (11.8%) from beyond the arc. Georgetown, meanwhile, got on track to shoot 31-for-64 (48.4%) from the field and 11-for-25 (44%) from long range. The win marked the first time since January 16, 2020 that Georgetown held an opponent to fewer than 50 points; on the night, they allowed only 37 to Life University.

Jones notched yet another double-double - his 13th of the campaign - with game-high totals in points (15) and rebounds (14). Boyd netted 14 points, and Rashad Bishop tallied a season-high 11 points. Seth Johnson led GC with four assists, and Boyd had three steals in the contest.

The win sends Georgetown on its final road trip of the season Thursday night, traveling first to Pulaski, Tennessee to face the Tennessee Southern Firehawks (19-7, 14-4 MSC) in a crucial battle for seeding in the MSC. Tip-off is slated for 9 p.m. Eastern.
