Tigers finish strong for 90-79 road win

A lot different in the 2020 Georgetown College – University of Pikeville men's basketball meeting. Lots of new faces, no fans in this COVID year, and Bears have a new head coach. However, the staple when these two meet was the same – it was an all-out battle.

It was a one-point lead for GC at the break and late in the second half it was just a two-point advantage before the Tigers (5-1, 2-1) pulled away for the 90-79 win.

Georgetown had a nine-point edge late in the first half, but the Bears clawed back and even held the lead. Derrin Boyd drove and beat the shot clock buzzer; UPike missed a runner to beat the halftime buzzer and it was 38-37 Georgetown at the break.

GC came out hot in the second half, pushing ahead by 12 at the first media timeout. The Bears responded with an 8-0 run that forced Tiger coach Chris Briggs to call time. Kyran Jones, who was quiet much of the first half, broke the scoreless skid out of the huddle and when he connected on an old-fashion three-point play it appeared things were well in hand for the visitors.

Brodricks Jones had the hot hand early, connecting on four of his first five shots including a long range three. Boyd had eight at the break and for the third straight game tallied a new career-high.
