Tigers never find rhythm in semifinal loss
Postseason can sometimes be tied up in the most desperate of situations. Teams needing conference tournament victories to try and advance to the national tournament. The Mid-South Conference teams battled all regular season and when the dust settled in one of the toughest leagues, everyone knew the tournament in Pikeville, Ky. would be infused with hungry teams. Saturday, it unfortunately nipped No. 9 Georgetown College men's basketball team's run at a conference title in the bud.
GC fell 80-58 to a very determined Lindsey Wilson College team.
Day one saw the seven and eight seeds give the top seeds a scare, while the five and six seeds advanced. Day two the drama continued. Campbellsville University and LWC (five and six seeds respectively) took out the one and two.
Campbellsville won a tight one with University of Pikeville, setting the stage for an interesting game with GC and Lindsey. As both CU and LWC are receiving votes, both schools knew making the championship game might make all the difference in the final coaches' poll and 2018 Buffalo Funds NAIA Men's Division I Basketball National Championship invites.
Georgetown seemed to understand the intensity the Blue Raiders played with early, taking a 6-2 lead. However, Lindsey started scoring in bunches and before the Tigers knew it, the deficit was too large.
GC managed just 21.4 from the field in the first half and slightly better in the second at 35.7. The team was even colder from three-point range – 20 percent in the first 20 minutes and 22 in the second.
The Tigers scored the first basket out of the halftime break, bringing the deficit to eight. It never got closer. GC went four-plus minutes without another basket as the visitors double the lead back to 16.
Georgetown got back within 11 several times, but never could get to single digits again.
Troy Steward led the offense with 15 points, while Quan Poindexter finished with 11.
