6th inning rally gives Tigers 3rd straight win

After 2 wins to clinch the series at Lindsey Wilson to start the week, Georgetown looked to keep things rolling Saturday against Bethel. The Tigers fell behind early in game 1, but thanks to a 4-run 6th, Georgetown rallied for a 6-5 win in the 7-inning opener.

Bethel scored a single run in each of the first 2 innings and 2 more in the 3rd off Georgetown starter, Chris Lenocker. The Tigers had their best early chance for offense in the bottom of the 2nd. With 1 out, Georgetown loaded the bases. Jacob VonThaden followed with a shallow fly to left field that was not deep enough for Luis Sosa to run on from 3rd. Jarrett Chapman then went down on strikes to retire the side and leave the bases full.

Anthony Barrera took over for Lenocker to start the 4th. After getting the first 2 outs, Barrera then gave up a gap double. Next was a single to right and a test of Braden Shepherd's arm. Shepherd passed with flying colors as he launched a perfect one-hopper to the plate to cut the runner down and end the inning. Defense turned into offense in the bottom of the 4th. Luis Sosa led off with a single to left. Elijah Verge then stepped in and demolished a 2-run bomb over the left field fence to halve Bethel's lead to 4-2.

Bethel got 1 run back in the top of the 6th with a solo homer to left. Georgetown then flipped the game in the bottom of the inning. With 1 out, Jarrett Chapman lofted a ball to the right center wall. The speedy shortstop motored all the way to 3rd for a triple. Payton Rios then followed with a bunt to the side of the mound, forcing the pitcher into a play at 1st, but Rios beat the throw and Chapman scored to make it a 5-3 Bethel lead. Jose Cazorla was hit by a pitch, moving Rios to 2nd. Nolan Smith then hit a ball towards left field that the Bethel defender dove for but missed. The ball got by, allowing Rios to score and Cazorla to take 3rd. Diondre Jacob then followed with a game-tying single to left. After a pitching change and only 1 out, Luis Sosa hit a deep fly to right to score pinch-runner Peyton Young and give Georgetown the 6-5 lead.

Barrera went back out for the 7th but was pulled after a leadoff walk. Bryson Huwar came on and struck out the 1st batter he faced. Huwar then fielded a grounder for the 2nd out, which moved the runner to 2nd. A wild pitch put the tying run 90 feet away, but the Tiger sidewinder delivered another strikeout to end the game. Huwar picked up his 2nd save of the season. Anthony Barrera got the win to improve to 2-4.
