Late offense seals series win

The old addage "better late than never" may have been Georgetown's mantra on Tuesday in its series finale at Lindsey Wilson. The Tigers scored 7 runs over the final 2 innings, including 5 in the 9th, to beat the Blue Raiders, 13-9, and secure a series victory.

The Blue Raiders struck for 2 runs in the bottom of the 1st off starter, Anthony Barrera. The Tigers immediately answered in the top of the 2nd as Braden Shepherd launched his 2nd homer of the series. This one was a 2-run shot that scored Nolan Smith and tied the game after 2.

Barrera was given the lead in the top of the 3rd. With 1 out, Payton Rios and Jarrett Chapman drew walks, then stole 3rd and 2nd, respectively. Jose Cazorla continued his big series with a double to left center that brought both runs homs for a 4-2 lead. Lindsey Wilson came right back as Barrera lost his control. A leadoff single was followed by 2 straight walks to load the bases. Barrera then committed an error on the next play to bring a run home and cut the Tiger lead to 4-3. Barrera was pulled for Dillon Bland. After a fielder's choice for the first out, Bland gave up an RBI single to left for the tying run. A sacrifice fly followed to give the Blue Raiders a 5-4 lead. Bland got out of further trouble with a groundout to strand runners on 2nd & 3rd.

Georgetown showed its mettle and came right back in the top of the 4th. Peyton Young reached via an HBP to start and stole second. He moved to 3rd on a failed pickoff attempt of Braden Shepherd at 1st. Shepherd was soon picked off for the first out of the inning, but Young was able to come home moments later on a groundout by Jacob VonThaden to tie the game at 5. Luis Sosa followed with a single and steal of 2nd. Jarrett Chapman stepped in and laced a single to left to score Sosa and put the Tigers back on top.

Lindsey Wilson came back on Dillon Bland in the bottom of the 5th. A leadoff single and walk immediately put the pressure on. A sac bunt moved the runners to 2nd & 3rd with 1 out. Bland then gave up a single to center to put the Blue Raiders back on top, 7-6. Lindsey Wilson added another run in the 7th for an 8-6 lead going to the 8th.

With 1 out, Jarrett Chapman launched a solo homer to center to get Georgetown within a run. Payton Rios came up next with a double to center. Jose Cazorla singled to left to score Rios and tie the game at 8-all. Bryson Huwar came on to pitch in the bottom of the 8th. With 1 out and 1 on, Huwar fired to first on a pickoff attempt. Georgetown got the runner in a quick rundown and tag for the 2nd out. A pop-up soon ended the threat to keep the game tied going to the 9th.

With 1 out, Diondre Jacob drew a pinch-hit walk. Luis Sosa followed and was hit by a pitch, moving Jacob into scoring position. Jarrett Chapman hit a sharp single to 3rd that allowed Jacob to come around to score for a 9-8 lead. Payton Rios then walked to load the bases. Jose Cazorla then hit a grounder to shortstop that was fumbled. Cazorla reached base and Sosa scored for a 10-8 lead. Nolan Smith roped a single to left to bring Chapman and Rios home. Elijah Verge then followed with a fielder's choice, but a throw got away which allowed Cazorla to score. In total, the Tigers scored 5 runs on just 2 hits with the aid of 2 errors. Lindsey Wilson got a run back in the 9th via a solo homer but no more as Georgetown secured the series win.

Jose Cazorla capped a big series, going 3-6 with 4 driven in. In the series, he hit .333 with 2 HRs and 11 RBI. Jarrett Chapman went 3-5 in the game and drove in 3. He went 5-12 with 2 HRs and 5 knocked in for the series. Bryson Huwar picked up his 1st win of the season.

Georgetown will look to keep the MSC momentum going this weekend with a home series against Bethel (TN).
