Zamora & Flores Combine to get Tigers to Bowling Green
All coach Guite could say about his pitching in the second game was that, "we commanded the mound. Josiah gave us a quality start, and Flores coming out of the 'pen is just big time." Command the mound they did, as together they struck out eleven Tigers, while only walking three. Together, they were all you could ask for, as Josiah Zamora looked to continue his win streak. Coming off of two wins and consecutive quality starts, Zamora had one thing on his mind and that was, "[to] go out there and compete and give our offense a chance to compete and stay hot." He did exactly that, as he started out the game with a 1-2-3 frame. Zamora would give up two runs in the third, as the soft contact he was generating were tough plays to make, but he was able to minimize any efforts of a big inning for CU. Zamora would go five strong innings in this one while striking out seven. He would exit in the top of the sixth, after he walked the first two batters. Matthew Flores, who is traditionally a starter, came out of the bullpen today and said that, "it's a little different but I started by coming out of the 'pen and it is fun to do and I just knew that I needed to trust my defense." Trusting his defense is exactly what he did, as he would pitch to contact, when he was portraying his devastating stuff and missing barrels. Zamora would get the win, as he would continue both streaks, as he moves 5-2 on the year, and Flores get an unofficial save, as he closed the game out, and secured the Tigers spot in Bowling Green next week.
The Tigers carried over their hot hitting from game one, as they would put up three essential runs in the bottom half of the first. Joshua Duarte started it off with a single through the left side, and then immediately stole second base. Nick Lopez would then single up the middle to score Duarte. Payton Rios would then deposit a ball over the right center fence to extend the Tigers lead to 3-0. The Tigers would then have some timely hitting, as coach Guite referenced how the Tigers were rolling today, and how good they are when they rally hits together. The Tigers would put up four runs, capped off by a 2-run double from Jose Cazorla.
The Tigers are now advancing to Bowling Green for the double elimination portion of the tournament at Bowling Green Ballpark May 4-7 in Bowling Green, as their opponent is still undecided.
