Walk Off Homerun Caps off a Pitchers Duel
In a series that was moved up due to possible inclement weather, the lone 9 inning contest left much more to be desired. Johan Castillo was entrusted with the start, with his conference low ERA of 1.85. Castillo would go 8 innings while throwing a season high of 122 pitches, 73 of which were strikes. Castillo would work three shutout innings, until in the fourth when the Patriots were able to string a couple of hits together. Over the next two innings, CU would scatter hits, but none of which amounted to anything, as Castillo would keep the Tigers ahead. In the seventh, CU was able to make things a little more spicy, as they would have runners on second and third. Castillo would give up a sacrifice fly to right field that scored one run, but on the throw in, it would get away, and allow both runs to score and tie the game. After the seventh it looked as if Castillo's day would be finished, but he would stay in and head back out for the 8th. He would work around an error and a wild pitch to strand a runner at third, thanks to his 8th and final strike out on his 122nd pitch of the day. Castillo would get the no decision in the game, since he left while it was tied, but his final line would be 8 IP, 8 Ks, 3 BB, and 2 ER.
Pasquale DeFilippis would be called upon in the 9th inning. He would give up a lead off single, but get out of it. Back out for the 10th, DeFilippis would once again work through it quickly, as he struck two of the three batters out. However, on his first pitch of the 11th inning, he would give up a home run, to give CU the win in game one.
The offense started quickly, as they scored in the 1st and 3rd innings. Joshua Duarte would be hit by a pitch to lead the game off. He would then steal second base. Hank Schineller would then hit a double that bounced off of the left center field wall to score Duarte.
In the third, Julian Huerta and Duarte would get some hits to be in scoring position, which led to Payton Rios driving Huerta in on a ground out.
In the fifth, Jose Cazorla would double to right center field to score Rios, who singled, with two outs. This pushed the Tigers lead out to 3-1. This would be the last runs the Tigers would score since CU made a pitching change in the top of the 6th. He would shut down the offense, only allowing one hit during his outing.
