Tigers Outlast CU in Series Finale
Back to the trend of starting quickly was in full action today. Scoring fast, early, and often was evident today. In the first, the Tigers capitalized on CU's mistakes. With runners on second and third, the Tigers would score both runs via a pitcher's miscue, wild pitches and passed balls. After the first, the Tigers led 2-0 without a single hit.
The third inning was fairly similar to the first as Joshua Duarte and Enrique Morales would reach base via an error and walk. With two outs, junior Payton Rios would record the Tigers first hit of the game, and score Duarte. Following Rios, designated hitter Jose Cazorla would single too, scoring another run. Jarrett Chapman would then deliver a double that scored another run. To cap off the inning, GC scored the last run of the inning off a balk. After 3 innings, the Tigers led 6-0.
Fast forward to the 7th, familiar faces would deliver for the Tigers once again. Jose Cazorla would get his second RBI of the day on a single up the middle. Chapman would then double again to plate his second and third RBI of the day. The Tigers now led 10-2, after 7 innings.
After an eventful 8th inning, the Tigers were now trailing. In his first career start, Jacob Dezarn would lead off the inning with a walk. He would then be on third after the next two batters bunted him over. With runners on second and third, Nick Lopez would ground out to shortstop, scoring the tying run. Now with two outs and a runner on third, Hank Schineller would put a ball in play to the shortstop that he could not handle to give the Tigers the lead, once again at 12-11.
In his 6th start of the season Matthew Flores would be purely dominant over the seven plus innings he went. Over the seven innings, he would strike out a season high 8 batters. As well he did not walk any batters on this Sunday afternoon. Prior to going back out in the 8th, Flores only allowed two runs to score, while scattering 6 hits and some Tiger errors.
The 8th inning was a long and stressful inning for the Tigers, as they allowed 9 runs to score and lose the lead. The inning was capped off with a 3-run CU bomb to give them their only lead of the day. Pitchers Andrew Day and Mason Mortimer would be the ones tasked with getting out of the inning, but walks and four hits would not mesh well. At the end, GC would be down 11-10 going into the bottom of the 8th.
Freshman Ashton Deskins would come in for the 9th, and would be the quickest and least stressful for coach Randy Guite as he would record the three outs on five pitches.
The Tigers end their six game losing streak with this game, and now move to 15-8 on the year. They are now 5-4 in Mid-South Conference action. The Tigers are back in action this weekend as they head to the University of the Cumberlands for a three game set. The Patriots are ranked 12th in the country, while Georgetown is ranked 17th. This is the Tigers second top 20 matchup this season. First pitch on March 24th is set for 3 pm.
