Deskins’ 4 Inning Save Leads Tigers Past Cleary
Fresh off an eleven day absence, the Tigers extended their win streak to four games by beating Cleary in game 1 of the double header, to move to 12-2.
The bats took a little to get started, but the bottom of the order got it going for the Tigers in the bottom of the third, when Julian Huerta and Joey Lapolla would reach base on a dropped third strike and a bunt single. The next two batters walked, while scoring one run. Sophomore catcher Nick Lopez then stepped up to the plate with them juiced and no outs. He delivered in a big way with a bases-clearing double, to extend the lead to 4-0. In the bottom of the 8th, the Tigers would add their final run thanks to Jarrett Chapman's 5th home run of the season.
Junior Josiah Zamora would get his fifth start of the year, looking for his first win of the season. Zamora would deliver by giving the Tigers a quality start. Zamora, who has been hurt by the long ball this season, did not allow a home run today. Zamora only allowed two runs on the day, 1 in the fourth and fifth. In the fourth, Zamora would allow only one run to score, but more importantly he would get an inning ending double play. In the 5th, he got two quick outs but would be hurt by some poor control and a wild pitch. Zamora would go 5 innings, allowing 2 runs, and striking three out. Ashton Deskins would come on in the 6th with a 2-run lead. He would shut the door close without any doubt. In only his career appearance, Deskins looked even better than his first outing. He would only allow one hit over the course of his four innings of work. The lone downside would be his three walks, but his defense would pick him up as he would get a double play to end the game. Deskins' final line would be 4 IP, 1 H, 0 ER, and 2 Ks.
