1st Career Complete Game from Day Leads to Sweep of the Weekend
Starting pitching for the Tigers has been very good for the early portion of the season, and that was no different today behind senior Andrew Day. However, it did not start off the prettiest as in the first inning, Day got into some trouble as St. Francis (IL) had the bases loaded with two outs. Day was able to navigate out of trouble by getting a ground out, and surrendering none. Day would then go back out for the next two innings and go six up six down. In the 4th, Day would get himself into a little bit of trouble again. It seemed as if he was going to avoid surrendering any runs, but he would give up a 2-run home run which would make the game 6-2. For the remaining three innings, Day would only allow one more run on two hits and getting his first complete game as a Tiger.
The Tiger bats picked right back up where they left from game one by coming out and scoring two in the first. Junior Joshua Duarte would start off the game with a single and would end up stealing two bases to be on third. Catcher Nick Lopez would then hit a double that would score Duarte. Junior transfer Payton Rios would then hit another sac-fly this weekend to score Lopez, and take a 2-0 lead after 1. The Tigers would then add another 4 runs in the 3rd thanks to some Saints errors, aggressive baserunning, and a single from junior Bryan Sanders. The continued trend of responding when scored on happened in the 4th when the Tigers responded with two of their own runs thanks to junior Hank Schineller. The Tigers offense was in full force today with 6 starters getting hits and two of them getting multiple.
The Tigers are back in action next weekend at home against Madonna University on Feb. 17th for a doubleheader starting at 2 PM.
Coach's Thoughts on the Day:
-
We struggled a bit on the mound in the first game today but our offense picked us up and we were resilient in the box to secure that win. Joshua Duarte had some clutch hits for us. Nick Lopez was fantastic behind the plate and also had big hits for us.
-
In the second game, we swung it well and had big hits from Lopez, Schineller, Sanders, and morales. Ran the bags really well. Andrew Day settled us in on the mound and gave us a really quality start and finish for us. That was big for him. Our defense was flying around the field making huge plays especially Bryan Sanders in RF made some big catches.
