Tiger Bats Lead Way Offensively in Tigers Sweep

Senior starting pitcher Matthew Flores picked up right where he left off following last weekend's outing. He continued his dominance by bringing his scoreless inning streak up to eleven innings. In the 4th, Flores surrendered his first runs of the season allowing two to score. However, he was able to get out of it and get through 5 to give the Tigers another quality start on the season. He finished with 5IP, 6Ks, 5H, 2BB, and 2 ER. In relief for the Tigers, senior Pasquale DeFlilippis would make his second appearance of the year. He came on and got his two outs via strike-out, but allowed the final run that the Cougars would score. In relief for DeFlilippis, junior Julian Huerta would be asked to get the final four outs of the game. He would manage to do so by striking out two and a ground-out and pop-out.

The Tiger bats finally woke up and erupted for 8 runs and 10 hits. The offensive onslaught was led by junior Jose Cazorla who went 3/4 with 2 doubles and 2 RBIs. Sophomore catcher Nick Lopez started the offensive barrage in the third inning when he hit RBI double to score Joshua Duarte. The Tigers would then add another quickly after thanks to a sac-fly from Payton Rios and an RBI single from Hank Schineller to cap off a 3-run inning. The Tigers would then continue the trend of answering back. In the bottom of the 4th, after the Cougars scored 2, the Tigers would add some insurance via a Duarte single. They would also add two more runs from sac-flies from Rios and Lopez. Then in the 6th, the Tigers would answer back again thanks to Cazorla's 3rd hit, a 2-run double that would seal the game and sweep the doubleheader against Saint Xavier.

The Tigers are back in action tomorrow as they face St. Francis (IL) in a doubleheader down in TN. Game 1 is slated to start at 12 pm with game 2 following shortly after.

Coache's Thoughts on the Day:

  • Johan was lights out today. Looked sharp and confident on the bump. He and Luke had a great connection and Luke called a great game. It was Johan's game to win.

  • Flores had another really quality start. Our offense definitely woke up in the 2nd game and saw 1-9 in our lineup hitting a lot of barrels. Nick Lopez was huge both offensively and defensively.

  • Our defense was fantastic again today.
