Poor Pitching Leads to Tigers First Loss of Season
Coming into game three against Reinhardt University, the Tigers were looking for the sweep. However, the Tigers would not get the sweep as they would lose 10-1. Sophomore transfer Jared Casebier made his debut for the Tigers and it will be one to forget. He only lasted two innings giving up four runs, walking one, and striking out one. RU jumped on Casebier early as they squeaked out to a 2-run lead in the bottom of the first. They would go on to score two more runs in the second inning and would bring Casebier's debut to an end after only 33 pitches. In the third, sophomore Justin Anaya came on in relief and would only go one inning allowing another run to make it 5-0 after three. In the fourth, sophomore left-hander Mason Mortimer came in for Anaya. He would manage to get 5 outs for the Tigers but allowed three runs over the course of his outing. Next in line for their season debut was junior transfer David Souza. He managed to only get one out in his outing while allowing two runs to score, making it 10-0. The last Tiger to make their season debut was freshman Ashton Deskins, who made a very good impression on Tiger fans, as he was the only pitcher today to not give up a run in his outing. He struck out 4 Eagle batters and only walking three.
The Tiger bats which had been hot were extinguished through the first six innings of this one due to RU starting pitcher Jordan Hampton, who went six no-hit innings. The Tigers got their first hit in the top of the 7th thanks to sophomore Nick Lopez who hit his first home run of the year to make it 10-1. Besides that, the Tigers were only able to muster up two additional hits from Luke Lindamood and Joshua Duarte.
The Tigers are back in action next weekend in Milligan, TN vs Saint Xavier. They play four games over the course of Friday and Saturday.
Coach's Thoughts on the Weekend:
-
We had a good series and saw a lot of good things that we did and things we can work on for sure.
-
But to go down on the road and win the series against the #20 ranked team in the country was impressive. That's a really good team we played and I was very excited to see our guys embrace the challenge and find ways to win.
-
Joshua Duarte was huge for us in the lead-off spot this weekend. He was relentless in the box and had big-time hits when we needed them. Thought Payton Rios played great both offensively and defensively.
-
Matt Flores was lights out in game 2 on the mound. He pitched outstanding.
-
A lot of guys had big moments in the box, on the mound and made plays. We were flying around the field and having fun. It was awesome to see. I'm really excited about this group. They can play some ball.
