7 run 9th Leads Tigers to First Win of Season and Gives Coach Guite First Career Win as Head Coach

The Georgetown Tigers season started off with a bang. Junior outfielder Joshua Duarte led the game with a solo shot to left-center to put the Tigers ahead, 1-0. The Tigers' lead would only last till the bottom of the second inning when junior starting pitcher Josiah Zamora gave up a 2-run homerun. The Tigers would grab the lead right back when transfer Jarrett Chapman hit a 2-run shot to take back the lead at 3-2. Zamora would settle in and end up getting through 6.1 innings pitched while giving up 3 runs and striking out 8.

The fireworks would start back up in the 7th when reliever Christian Santillanes came in and gave up a go-ahead 2-run home run to trail 4-3. Reinhardt University would go on to add another run. The Tigers would respond back for the second time thanks to a Hank Schineller 2-run single and a sac-fly from transfer outfielder Joey Lapolla to take the lead, 6-5. RU would also respond in the bottom of the 8th with 2 more runs to reclaim the lead. The Tigers would respond once again, and this time in a big way. The Tigers would go on to score 7 runs in the top of the 9th as Duarte and Schineller would both hit 2-run bombs to highlight the inning. Four different Tigers would get a hit, but junior transfer Payton Rios' big day at the plate would continue when he plated 2 on his fourth hit of the day, and secure a Tigers win at 13-7.

The Tigers' bullpen was shaky today. Santillanes, Day, DeFilippis, and Huerta would work to get the final eight outs of the game to secure the win. The Tigers bullpen ended with 4 walks to 3 strikeouts and allowing 3 runs.

The Tigers are back in action tomorrow against Reinhardt University with a doubleheader starting at noon, with the second game following shortly after.

Coaches Thoughts:

  • It was a hard-fought game with both sides battling back and forth it was really fun to watch especially those last two innings. I thought our guys played with elite focus and good confident energy. That 9th inning showed that.

  • Josiah was a stud tonight. Didn't have his best stuff and still kept us in the game for 6 innings. His confidence on the mound spreads through to our team.

  • Offensively we were great. It was really nice having Josh Duarte start 2023 off with a BIG BANG with one of his two HRs coming from his first at-bat of the season. Payton Rios was so efficient at the plate tonight and had a huge 2rbi double in the 9th to take the lead. Hank Schineller had a big night with 4rbi.

  • Defensively we were very clean and made every routine play along with some huge game-changing plays.
