Fieger's gem helps Tigers beat IUS
Kyle Fieger's last two starts have been complete-game gem wins. Georgetown College baseball threw the junior to start the Lawrenceville, Ga. opening round site in the national tournament. He went nine-innings, scattering six hits and one earned run as the No. 13 Tigers (44-13) beat No. 24 Indiana University Southeast, 6-1. It's Fieger's second win over IUS this season.
GC's offense came to life in the fourth after managing just one hit in the first 10 batters. The Tigers drew a pair of walks, then a balk set up a two-out double by Randall Schab for all the offense the home team needed. Shota Usuda singled to score Schab for the first insurance run.
Three more runs on three hits put the final tallies on the board in the fifth inning. Tyler Wagner reached on an error and Val Stammler doubled to set the stage for Chris Gilbody. He singled to score those two, then scored himself on Ryan Gaynor's double.
Georgetown managed a hit in each of the final three at-bats, but did not score nor need to score any more.
The Grenadiers (35-19) struck first with two hits and a run in the top of the fourth. Fieger set down the next eight hitters and allowed four hits the rest of the game.
Georgetown is back in action 3 pm Tuesday against the winner of No. 4 Georgia Gwinnett College and Union College, starting at 7 pm. Union defeated RV St. Xavier University, 13-12, to start the action Monday.
