Tigers rally for 4-2 win over LWC
Chris Gilbody led off with a double in the top of the eighth – his first hit of the game. This sparked Georgetown College baseball to three runs on three hits, two walks and a wild pitch to rally for a 4-2 win over Lindsey Wilson College.
It was game one of the 2018 Mid-South Conference baseball tournament in Bowling Green, Ky. Now the Tigers (28-20) advance to the final game of day one against University of the Cumberlands (44-7). First pitch is set for 7 pm EDT and will be broadcast through portal.stretchinternet.com/georgetown.
Antonio Monroy followed Gilbody with an RBI double. Sean Williams advanced him with a sacrifice bunt. Then when Wagner ground out, it appeared GC would head to the bottom half of the inning with a tie.
Ryan Garner pinch hit, drawing a walk, to set the stage for Rodnee Little. His RBI single scored Monroy and Garner added the insurance on a wild pitch by the third Blue Raider pitcher of the inning, Ricky Winfield.
Kyle Fieger picked up the win for Georgetown, while Michael Koltak stranded a pair of runners with one out in the bottom of the eighth and finished it with three up, three down in the ninth for a the save.
Fieger threw 101 pitches, scattered nine hits, allowed two runs, struck out three and walked two. Early in the game, the sophomore stranded three through three with his quickest inning being a one-two-three third with just eight pitches.
The flood gates opened in the bottom of fourth as Steven Calderon took a pitch over the right field wall to tie the game. LWC (22-27) scored two runs on four hits that inning for a one-run lead.
Both teams had opportunities over the three innings, but it was the leadoff double by Gilbody that changed the game for GC.
The visitors opened the scoring as John Shattles got the Tigers first hit in the top of the third with a leadoff single. He moved into scoring position with a sacrifice bunt by Diego Perez and scored on a single by Phillip Tomasulo. GC was held hitless until Monroy's single in the sixth. Georgetown's only action was a double off an error and a walk for 10 hitters.
Kelvin Guzman retired five of the next seven hitters before facing Gilbody in the eighth. He finished his day with 95 pitches, scattering seven hits, allowing three runs, walking one and striking out six.
Monroy led from the plate with two hits. Gilbody, Williams, Little, Shattles, Perez and Tomasulo all had one. Monroy and Little picked up RBI hits, while Taylor Morris (running for Gilbody), Monroy, Garner and Shattles scored a run.
