Tigers split with Bears on Senior Day
Georgetown College baseball finished off a very solid eight day stretch. The Tigers won seven of their past nine games, including two of three from University of Pikeville during senior weekend.
GC got a few more home runs – three run shot by Antonio Monroy and solo shots from Sean Williams and Rodnee Little – on the way to a 10-3 win in game one Saturday.
Following the senior ceremony it was a pitcher's duel for the first time all weekend. The stalemate lasted four and a half innings when Georgetown broke it up with two runs in the bottom of the fifth. UPike showed life and rallied to win 4-3.
"Emotions of senior day can be so tough to manage," said GC coach Micah Baumfeld. "I'm proud of the way our guys battled and while we wanted that sweep and a perfect senior weekend, hopefully these past eight days has really taught us a lot about what we are capable of doing."
GC swept Shawnee State University to get rolling. The team followed that with a mercy-rule win over Union College and an 8-1 win over No. 15 Point Park University. The Pioneers bounced back for a win on day two. The Tigers took the next two games – wins over Pikeville – before falling in game three by one run.
The two losses came in two of the three seven inning games played during the eight day stretch.
In game one Saturday, Georgetown had nine hits. Chris Gilbody, Monroy, Williams and Little all tallied two, while Diego Perez's single led to the first run of the game.
Kyle Fieger pitched the win, going six innings. He scattered five hits, allowed two runs and struck out four. He gave way to senior Michael Koltak who went two and a third. He scattered three hits, allowed one run and struck out two before giving way to senior Brandon Calia. He slammed the door, allowing just one hit in his two-thirds inning.
It was another nine-hit game in the night cap with Gilbody and Williams getting two each again.
The Tigers manufactured two runs in the fifth, using errant throws by the Bears. Unfortunately, in the top of the sixth with two outs, UPike did the same. The visitors capitalized on a misplayed grounder to keep the inning going, scoring the tying runs on the next play.
Pikeville then took the lead for good in the top of the seventh with two runs. With two outs, GC mounted a rally that came up one run shy.
Georgetown finishes the regular season Friday and Saturday in Grayson, Ky. against Kentucky Christian University.
