Tigers pound out win over Bears, 10-3
Georgetown College baseball tore the cover off the ball during its mid-week game, hopefully igniting the bats for the upcoming Mid-South Conference series. The Tigers (17-13) pounded out eight hits and took advantage of four West Virginia Tech errors in a 10-3 win Wednesday.
Now, with the spring weather staying with its unpredictable potential for more rain and snow, GC and Cumberland University have agreed to move the Friday-Saturday series to Thursday-Friday. First pitch of a doubleheader on Thursday is set for 3 pm. Friday's time is set for 2 pm.
"It's been a difficult task to find a rhythm when so much of our season has been altered in one way or another," said GC coach Micah Baumfeld. "The guys have been working hard and the uncertainty of if we will or won't play wears on you. It was good to get a mid-week game in to break up the practice routine, especially with how well we hit and pitched.
"Now we face a very difficult challenge for three games against a very good Cumberland University team."
Georgetown wasted no time Wednesday as one hit scored two runs – the home team never looked back. It added runs in every inning but two, and exploded for four runs in the bottom of the fourth to answer the Golden Bears (11-24) rally attempt.
WVT scored three runs on three hits to pull within a run. However, Jeremiah Johnson started the bottom of the inning with a single. Eight batters later, the Tigers had four runs off three hits highlighted by an RBI single from Chris Gilbody and a two RBI single from Jake Purkins.
GC added another run in the fifth to further push ahead and then Benjamin Robison added the exclamation mark with a solo home run with two outs and a full count.
Robinson replaced Gilbody to catch the final few innings. Baumfeld got three hits out of four plate appearances with three RBI, three runs scored and a walk.
Tom Taplin started and picked up the win, going six innings by scattering seven hits with six strikeouts. He allowed three runs. Taplin gave way to Shamon Moss who pitched a scoreless three innings, scattering four hits and striking out five.
Johnson had two hits and scored twice, while Tyler Wagner had one hit with three RBI.
