GC splits the doubleheader with CU

Georgetown College baseball played a pair of Mid-South Conference games against No. 19 Campbellsville University Friday. The GC Tigers (16-10, 2-3) split the day with the CU Tigers (17-9, 1-1).

Campbellsville used early offense and an unearned run to hand ace pitcher Shawn Dubin his first loss, 5-4. Chris Gilbody then ignited the home Tigers with a double, a run and a home run as GC won game two 5-3.

"Little things here and there matter," said Georgetown coach Micah Baumfeld. "Tough to have such an outing from Shawn come up without a win, but we knew if we could get our offense going we'd get a win in game two. Leveling the series through two games is huge, especially after a 1-2 start in Columbia, (Ky.) last weekend."

CU scored two runs in the first and third innings, but it was a two base error in the fourth that really hurt. Dubin had settled down and was on his way to another 14-strikeout day. He now has 78 for the season, six shy of tying the school's single-season record. Unfortunately, the error produced the winning run.

GC had gone hitless through eight batters over two and two-thirds innings. Enter John Shattles. The outfielder got the home team going in his first at bat, crushing the first pitch he saw over the left field fence. This made it 4-1 after three, but CU got it back as Jalen Horton reached on an error and took second base from the over throw. Matthew Valdez's single scored Horton, which proved to be the difference.

GC responded to that with a two-run home run from Brandon Benson in the bottom of the fourth. Georgetown scored once more in the seventh, but could not make up the final run.

Gilbody gave the home team its first lead of the day, blasting a lead-off double and scoring on a single by Antonio Monroy. Despite not scoring another run in the first, GC sent enough batters up that Gilbody was back up to lead off the bottom of the third.

He roped the Tigers third home run of the day over the fence in left, clearing the scoreboard. This started a four-run inning, enough cushion to withstand a Campbellsville rally.

CU touched up Kyle Fieger for three runs on four hits, but the sophomore settled in and pitched two more shutout innings before handing the ball to Breion Barron. He retired the first two batters easily and then made the home crowd sweat a minute. Ty Housden singled for the lone hit given up by Barron. He retired Logan Roberts, CU's relief pitcher and designated hitter, on a fly out to center.

The two Tiger teams are schedule for a series game three, however, weather currently has this game up in the air. If Kentucky, and most importantly the northern band, gets the snow predicted the two teams, if the field can be cleared, will try to play a game Sunday. If the system shifts up higher, more into the Ohio area and out of Kentucky, these two teams may be able to play on Saturday.
