Dubin strikes out 14 in win over Madonna

Shawn Dubin was magnificent in a pitchers' duel Friday and the Georgetown College baseball offense scored when the opportunities presented themselves in a 2-0 win over Madonna University. The senior pitcher struck out 14, running his season total to 55, as he picked up his fifth win and third complete game.

He went nine innings, scattering three hits with no runs against a Crusader team (18-6) which has scored 167 runs coming into the game.

The two will square off Saturday in a doubleheader, first pitch is set for 1 pm at Robert N. Wilson Field.

Georgetown scored the winning run in the bottom of the second. Nick Giambalvo got it going with the first hit of the game – single. Then during Brandon Benson's at bat, MU tried to catch the GC runner leaning toward second. One pickoff attempt went past the first baseman and down the right field line. This allowed Giambalvo to take second and third.

Benson capitalized with an RBI single. The Tigers had its most productive hitting inning following those two singles. Two more infield singles had the bases loaded with just one out. However, Tyler Butzin and the Crusaders were able to work out of that with a strikeout and a fly out.

Butzin, on the mound for MU, nearly matched Dubin. Throwing eight innings with 11 strikeouts. He scattered six hits – four of which came in the second inning – and walked just one in his last inning pitching. Antonio Monroy drew the two out walk in the eighth. His pinch runner, Taylor Morris, stole second and scored on an RBI single by Phillip Tomasulo.

Dubin walked his second batter of the day to start the ninth. However, Frankie Lucska grounded into a shortstop to first double play to really end a threat of a rally. Dubin ended the day with his 14th strikeout.

In the top of the sixth, MU had its best chance with one out and runners at the corners. Lucska grounded into a short to second to first double play to end that threat.

GC got one hit each from Monroy, Giambalvo, Tomasulo, Benson, Adryan Ramirez and John Shattles.
